In addition to consumer metadata, you will want to attach additional metadata to each video in order to better manage your assets. Administrative metadata includes each video’s publication and expiration date; technical distribution rights; geographic distribution rights; supported transactional models; and revenue rules. We call this set of metadata a video’s ‘policies’.
Working with Policies
Managing policies will allow you to fine tune your distribution and monetization strategy over time. Common controls include:
- Access Restrictions Control how your videos may be accessed by specifying their window of availability by date, geographic availability by IP range or continent (where applicable), technical distribution rights to allowable mediums including any/all of Internet, mobile, cable, etc., and a list of allowable distribution outlets.
- Transactional policies: Specify the transactional models that are supported by each video including the option to support multiple models for the same video or if different models should be applied for each allowable distribution medium. You may have the ability to show video shorts under both an ad supported and subscription model on the Internet, but require that long-form content be shown only as transactional VOD on IPTV services for example.
- Revenue rules: Each transactional model requires a different set of revenue rules. If subscriptions or transactional VOD - what is the minimum pricing? If advertising - what is the minimum CPM and allowable presentation model in terms of ad frequency, use of pre-roll or overlay formats, etc.?
